Why Kinross works for a golf break
Golf breaks in Scotland are fast becoming the first choice for touring visitors, and Kinross sits right in the middle of it all. From The Old Schoolhouse you can reach St Andrews, Gleneagles, Stirling, Edinburgh, Glasgow and the lower Highlands in around an hour, and there are three courses on the doorstep before you go anywhere.
The house sleeps four in two bedrooms, has two private parking spaces at the rear for the clubs, and a washing machine for the kit. All on one level, which is appreciated after 36 holes.
On the doorstep
Kinross Golf Club, a short walk away
Two 18-hole courses, the Bruce and the Montgomery, laid out in the parkland of the Kinross House estate on the shore of Loch Leven. Both are kept in great condition all year round, the club is friendly and welcoming to visitors, and you can walk there from the house.
Milnathort Golf Club, five minutes by car
A nine-hole course in the next village along, so play it twice. Relaxed, good value and a nice change of pace.
Within the hour
The Old Course, St Andrews, 45 minutes
The home of golf. Enter the ballot or book well ahead, and leave time for the town, the beaches and the British Golf Museum.
Gleneagles, 25 minutes
Three championship courses in a spectacular Perthshire setting. The PGA Centenary Course hosted the 2014 Ryder Cup.
Kingsbarns and Carnoustie, under an hour
Kingsbarns is a modern clifftop links that has quickly earned its place among Scotland’s best. Carnoustie, an Open Championship venue, is a serious test, with the Barry Burn waiting on the 18th.
After the golf
Kinross has plenty of restaurants, bars and coffee shops, and the spa in the grounds of Kinross House if the legs need it. Be sure to call in at Loch Leven Brewery near the entrance to Kinross Golf Club. They brew some fantastic beers and make gin as well.
