Loch Leven in winter
The Heritage Trail is at its quietest and most beautiful: frosty mornings, low golden light and the Lomond Hills white-topped across the water. Flat, well surfaced and a five-minute walk from the door.
Thousands of geese
RSPB Loch Leven is one of the best places in Britain to see pink-footed geese. From October to March tens of thousands roost on the loch, and the dawn and dusk fly-pasts are something you don't forget.
Christmas and Hogmanay
Edinburgh's Hogmanay is 40 minutes away, with Perth and Stirling closer still. Come home to a warm house with your own front door, two parking spaces and no hotel breakfast queue.
Slow mornings, pub evenings
Kinross has good restaurants, coffee shops and the Loch Leven Brewery, all on foot. The house has a fully fitted kitchen for the nights you'd rather stay in with a film.
Winter golf
Kinross Golf Club keeps both courses open through winter and the greens in good order. Many golfers prefer the empty fairways and off-peak rates.
Dogs welcome
Winter is the best time for muddy walks. Dogs are welcome, there's an enclosed garden to shake off in, and the loch shore is minutes away.
